Welcome to the ACTS Podcast!

The Christian life involves not just believing something about Christ but also believing something about us.  We must believe that we are indeed part of Christ’s new creation.  Our faith in Christ must include believing that we are exactly what the Bible says we are.  Our personal self-image should be primarily positive.  This does not mean feeling good about ourselves on the basis of our own achievements or virtuous behavior.  This would be sinful pride.  The Christian self-image means looking at ones self in the light of God’s gracious work of forgiveness and renewal.

“The Cleansing Gift of Christ” – has been given to us because we cannot wash away our own sins, we need His help.  (Ephesians 2:8-10) “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

John's message was, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"  The King would soon appear, but He could not and would not reign over people who clung to their sins.  They must change directions, must confess and forsake their sins.  God was calling them from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of heaven.

No gift is acceptable to God if the giver is harboring unresolved anger (Matthew 5:21-26).  The giver, knowing someone is holding unresolved anger, has the "Ability" to give a "Response" to that person by seeking them out and reconciling their differences.

When you pray, about your giving to the Church, does God prompt your heart?  Are you sensitive to His prompts?  Every now and then God allows you to see that you have a greater ability.  God may challenge your heart with a prompt to give an amount that will cause your faith muscle to be strained.  Remember the impoverished Macedonian Christians did not have much financial ability to give.  But their faith ability carried them through in giving a powerful gift to the famine-ravaged Judeans.  (Hebrews 11:6) “without faith it is impossible to please God.”

Jesus was teaching the people about the hypocrisy of the scribes.  He described them as lusting for recognition, seeking the best positions, stealing from the helpless, yet making a pretense of being religious (Mark 12: 38-40).  Sitting in the women's court where the offering receptacles were located (2Kings 12:9), Jesus used one woman as an example.  The comparison is spectacular.

When my giving impacts my lifestyle it gets my heart’s attention.  And when my giving gets my hearts attention it will get God’s attention too. Singing a worship song is not necessarily worship, and neither is writing a check.  But when the heart engages in a meaningful way through a praise song or a hymn, it becomes more than just singing.  Friends when the heart engages through a gift that matters, it becomes more than just writing a check.  What about you?  Do your gifts engage your heart in worship?  Do your gifts influence your lifestyle?

The highs & lows, the ups & downs of life associated with being the people of God is something that we all accept as a part of living in a fallen world.  But what happens when you've just experienced a colossal achievement and then no sooner than you can celebrate you encounter a bizarre defeat?  And to futher complicate matters it's all your fault or not necessarily your fault directly but someone else's fault who you're in relationship with.  What is God telling us in such circumstances?  Pastor Daryl brings us the answers in this sermon.

Paul says we need to be an example to others when it comes to the health of our bodies and spirits.  For instance if you want to loose weight, establish your motivation to loose weight.  Find a reason that will hold you on your path.  …Solidify in your understanding that the active life you want to live is dependent on the food you choose to eat.  Examine your life to see if there are ways you can simplify your routine to make time for exercise and better meal planning.  (T. You might say I can’t love people who hurt me, people who have treated me un-fairly…  Paul in (Romans 8:37-39) writes:  Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We can learn from what is revealed in our dreams, especially Toxic Dreams. (Caroline Leaf, 2009). As we sweep away the toxic dreams we make more room for clear memories.  The Preacher of Ecclesiastes informs us that dreams involve a lot of work.  You want to have good dreams?  Jesus said in (John 14:3) “I will come again”!  It is this blessed HOPE…

That brings peace to the troubled mind.

That brings joy to the grieving soul.

That brings comfort to the aching heart.  It causes…

The weak to become stronger.

The despairing to become encouraged.

The anxious to become assured.

When given opportunity, this Hope can create… Blessings out of burdens, Victories out of defeats, And faith out of frustrations!

You might be in a storm right now, but keep holding on!

But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”  It is impossible to be a faithful kingdom builder and committed follower of Christ without thoughts and behavior motivated through the emotion of love.  If we sincerely want to be Kingdom Builders, we must manage our thoughts and emotions in ways that our lives honor God.

(Proverbs 13:12a)  It is good for a person to have hope, but if it is not fulfilled for a long time (deferred means “put off or long drawn out) then he experiences disappointment (his heart becomes sick).  He is not talking about eternal hope, but temporal hope.  A hope that one can set a goal and accomplish that goal. When we set attainable goals and reach them we become people who see life with “HOPE”!

Christians often distinguish between what they do for a living and what they do in a "ministry" capacity in the local church.  Is it legitimate and/or biblical to make such a distinction?  Paul makes the case that if we have truly been raised with Christ to new life (Colossians 3: 1-2), then one of the ways this will show up is in the way in which we go about our occupational responsibilities.  Does our work ethic demonstrate to our colleagues that we've been raised with Christ?

The twelfth trait of an irresistible church, a church God loves to bless, is that she has a plan. If we intend to “Build the Dream”, we better have a plan! God is giving ACTS an “Unprecedented Opportunity” and if we want to be a Church that is irresistible to God, a Church that God blesses; we must become a Church with a plan!

* A plan to save our children

* A plan to save marriages

* A plan to save the family

* A plan to minister to the hurts and hopes of the people of our community

The characteristic of “humility” is demonstrated when a church follows the instructions of (James 4:10) “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Humility is remembering who we are in light of who God is. As Christians, we have a vital assignment that we don’t want to miss. It’s easy to get caught up in many things and miss what we’re supposed to be about.

We are still learning to hear God. If we move forward with a pure heart out of relationship with Christ, and we have not ascertained His guidance correctly, then two things happen: 1.) God is still pleased with our actions because we still moved forward with obedience, and 2.) Romans 8:28 comes into play – God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

The Christian’s behavior is compared to a walk for several reasons: (1) it demands life, for the dead sinner cannot walk; (2) it requires growth, for a little baby cannot walk; (3) it requires liberty, for someone who is bound cannot walk; (4) it demands light, for no one wants to walk in the dark; (5) it cannot be hidden, but is witnessed by all; and (6) it suggests progress toward a goal. When refurbishing a building that has been standing for some time, one must have a plan. You must also consider resources and the people who will build. The Word of God says: (Luke 14:28-30) For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it. Lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
